The game was layed in wet conditions and started badly for the Steelers when outside half Nico Setaro’s kick was charged down, gathered and run in by Coleg Gwent’s influential James Benjamin. The try was converted giving Coleg Gwent an early 7-0 lead.
The Steelers responded immediately when fly half Setaro made amends for his early error by gliding through Gwent’s defence and with support players all around, it was captain Curtis Morris who received a well timed pass allowing the back rower to race in under the posts. Setaro slotted the conversion making it all square.
Gwent struggled to cope with power of Scarlets academy centre Iolo Evans throughout and it was a bursting run from him that led that to a penalty kick that put the Steelers in the lead for the first time.
It was Coleg Gwent’s turn to respond immediately with a well worked driving lineout allowing captain Jamie Sollis to squeeze over. Just before half time Setaro retained the lead for Sir Gar with a well taken 40m penalty goal giving the Steelers a 13-12 half time lead.
It was Coleg Sir Gar who started the second half the strongest with charging runs from the front five giving the quality ball that the back line thrive off. As a result strong running centre Dylan Morgans showed great strength and pace and was able to power his way through the strong Gwent defence to score in the corner. Another accurate kick from Setaro gave Sir Gar an eight point cushion.
It was now time for Sir Gar to show their steel in defence and this is where man of the match Owain Powell excelled with the pocket rocket open side putting big hit after big hit in, stopping any Gwent attacks gain momentum.
With only minutes to go Gwent finally broke through the resolute Sir Gar defence scoring a well worked try under the posts, but it was to be in vain as the Steelers held on to win 20 – 19.
After the Ester break Coleg Sir Gar will play Myerscough College (Sale Academy) in the British Colleges Cup Final.
