Clubs and individuals throughout Wales are invited to make nominations for club members, players, fans and volunteers who form a vital part of club life at www.wru130.co.uk with the WRU hailing these individuals as the lifeblood of our national game.
Traditionally the phrase “Unsung Hero” conjures up images of club grounds men, tea ladies and even senior members like chairmen or secretaries, and these individuals should all be included in applications, but the WRU plans to open its search even wider.
Significant players who may have contributed to club life throughout the age group levels, fans who never fail to miss a match, bus drivers who are lucky charms or mums who wash kit on a regular basis, will all be in with a chance to win three top prizes as well as tickets to watch Wales versus the Barbarians on Saturday 4 June (2.30pm).
Whatever job or task they do, if you can think of someone that means mean the world to your club, the WRU wants you to nominate them.
Three major prizes are on offer for the top “unsung heroes” which will be chosen by a WRU panel, all themed around the WRU’s 130th anniversary game against the flair filled Barbarians side at the Millennium Stadium.
The top prize includes a hospitality box at the game for you and your family plus a coaching session at your club given by a Welsh international player. Second prize is hospitality for four plus an array of Wales national team signed merchandise and third prize is hospitality tickets to the game for four people.
Up to 40 other nominees, once verified, will also qualify for a pair of tickets to see Wales take on the Baa Baas in a capped game which will form a vital part of the side’s 2011 Rugby World Cup preparations.
“We want to scour the length and breadth of Wales to find those people that are at the very heart of the communities and that mean the most to rugby clubs,” said WRU executive board member Craig Maxwell.
“The nominees don’t have to be high profile, they can be players, volunteers, members or simply fans, but they will all have one thing in common.
“They will all be people who have made major contributions, often in unseen ways, behind the scenes and front of house at rugby clubs and they will be people who deserve recognition.
“It doesn’t matter how large or small the contributions may seem, these people are the heart beat of our national game and this initiative sets out to reward them.”
Clubs or individuals can nominate the “Unsung Heroes” of their rugby communities online at www.wru130.co.uk at anytime before the closing date of May 15. Winners will be announced in two waves, on the 28th April and then 26th May.
