The famous invitation club kick-off a busy period on Tuesday, 12 April when they play Richmond at the Athletic Ground to celebrate their 150th anniversary season.
Included in the Barbarians’ 22-man squad are three Wizards from Aberavon, wing Richard Carter, fly-half Jamie Davies and hooker Marc Breeze. They will be joined by Cardiff Blues’ flanker, Thomas Young.
Seven days later the Barbarians travel to Bedford for the 84th Mobbs Memorial Match with another four Welshmen in their squad. Llanelli’s Craig Hawkins and Adam Powell are joined by the Neath duo, Euros Evans and Ross Davies.
Barbarian secretary Alan Evans said, “These games give us an opportunity to invite players who have served their clubs well and loyally over the years and we greatly appreciate the support we get from their home clubs by making them available.”
He added, “We like to think that playing for the Barbarians also gives players a new environment with the players they mix with. It’s a two-way process because in the course of the next fortnight we also have players from Portugal, Canada, USA, Ireland, Scotland, France and Japan in our squads.
For both matches our coach will be Nick Mallett and another Springbok, Thinus Delport, will be our captain.”
The Barbarians will assemble again next month when their two-match summer tour starts with the annual fixture against England at Twickenham on Sunday 29 May and climaxes the following Saturday, 4 June, at the Millennium Stadium with the eagerly anticipated fixture against Wales.
