In front of a sizeable and enthusiastic crowd on Saturday at the Millennium Stadium Glamorgan Wanderers beat Newport Saracens 26-11 points to retain the Webb Ellis Youth Cup.

Glamorgan Wanderers took an early lead after pressure from their pack. No.8 and Captain Daniel Crimmins used his power to cross the Saracens line for two close range tries in the first 10 minutes of the match. It was a lead that the Wanderers never surrendered.

After looking overawed in those early minutes Newport Saracens fought back, in particular through good interplay amongst their speedy backs. The Wanderers defence held firm despite the Saracens pressure and the Newport club’s only success came from two penalties kicked by Sam Bevan.

In the second half the kicking of Josh Hurley, both at goal and from hand, kept the Wanderers in the box seat. Hurley had a haul of three penalties and a conversion and earned himself the Man of the Match title.

Halfway through the second period an adventurous move from the Wanderers saw Ioan Mortimer cross for a try wide out. That try sealed the victory for the Ely based team.

It also spurred Newport Saracens to greater efforts. To their credit the Saracens launched a series of exciting attacks before gaining their reward with a try from James Casey.

Glamorgan Wanderers will have little time to celebrate their victory as they will start their campaign in the National Youth League Play Offs with a difficult fixture with Bargoed at Bedwas. The Wanderers will be trying to capture the RAF League title that eluded them last season.
