Return excites Jones

Wales fly-half Stephen Jones has admitted he is excited at the prospect of making his mark at the World Cup after returning to fitness following a calf injury.

The Scarlets playmaker missed all three of Wales World Cup warm-up games and the opening two fixtures of the 2011 tournament with the injury but is back in contention to feature in Wales’ clash with Namibia on Monday.

And having watched his country push World Champions South Africa all the way in their opening match and then beat Samoa in Hamilton last weekend, Jones is desperate to get some game time in his fourth World Cup.

“If I’m involved I will be delighted,” he said.

“I’m desperate to get on the pitch and I just want to get out their and enjoy the tournament.

“I haven’t had a lot of game time but I have been training hard and taking part in integrated sessions so it’s not going to be a big step-up.

“Training has gone well but I just want to get out there and put into practice the game plan.

“Its all about momentum for us now and what is on the horizon is exciting but we can’t take our eye off the ball and the game that is in front of us.

“Namibia are a very physical outfit and they put in a good performance against Fiji.

“The outside-half had a great day and he’s got a great kicking game so we will need to keep an eye on him.”

Jones is still waiting to make his record equalling 101st appearance for Wales but in his absence team-mate Rhys Priestland has starred in the fly-half berth and Jones believes Priestland deserves the praise he has received.

“He’s a top guy and I have a lot of respect for him,” he added.

“He’s a top player and has played very well.

“He has come in and shown his ability and played brilliantly.  He has the mental strength required and is comfortable with the game plan.  He puts a lot of time and work into his game and he reaps the rewards.”
