It was sweet revenge for the Steelmen over the newly relegated Premiership outfit following their defeat by them in last season’s end of season play-offs. There were no slip-ups this time, though, as tries from Nicky Coughlin, Tom Daly, Dan Deardon, Ross Jones and Tom Ashmead allowed the visitors to hit back from an early 8-0 and then 14-10 deficit to win with a bonus point.
While last season’s champions were giving the relegated team a hard time, the 2010/11 runners-up, Newbridge were teaching newly promoted Tredegar a thing or two on their trip up the Gwent valley. There were eight tries in a 50-22 triumph for the visitors.
Last season’s Division 2 East champions Mountain Ash didn’t fare much better. Unbeaten throughout last season’s promotion drive, Mountain Ash found themselves conceding two tries and going down to a 13-0 defeat at Beddau.
Rhys Morgan grabbed the only points of the game at Treorchy when he crossed for a try on 10 minutes to give Blackwood a 5-0 victory, while Bargoed wing Lee Pearson was the star performer as he ran in four of his side’s five tries in a 32-6 win over visiting Rumney.
There were also five tries for Gilfach Goch, and 19 points for Ian Davies, in their resounding 44-18 home win over Merthyr, while Ystrad Rhondda ran in seen in their 51-3 home triumph in Division 2 East over Bedlinog. There were also five tries at home for Heol y Cyw in their 41-27 win over Llantrisant, while Ynysywbl got six in their 53-10 triumph at Tylorstown.
