Jones tipped for quick recovery

Alun Wyn Jones has been tipped to win his battle to face England in the RBS Six Nations.

It was feared the Wales lock would miss the Championship following surgery on a dislocated toe.

But Ospreys director of rugby Scott Johnson has backed the World Cup star to defy the odds with a rapid return in time for the clash at Twickenham on February 25.

“We will let nature take it’s course but we’d like to think by the middle of the Six Nations he’d be up and firing,” said Johnson.

“There’s not a lot of history on this type of injury and not knowing how long he will be out for is the biggest frustration. But anyone can defy logic it’s this kid.

“He has done it before when he recovered from an elbow injury last season in half the time expected.”

Wales are already without Luke Charteris for the Six Nations and it would be a major blow if Jones joined the Newport Gwent Dragons lock on the sidelines.

He dislocated his big toe during training ahead of the Heineken Cup tie against Treviso last month.

Warren Gatland’s men start their campaign against Ireland and Scotland before travelling to Twickenham.

“The big toe is really important for his position, with a lot of pushing and jumping, so there’s a big question mark,” added Johnson.

“The operation was a success but the scheme of things is basically between eight and 69 weeks. Even for the medical fraternity that’s a large scope.”
