Wales have been placed in the same pool as Portugal and Zimbabwe along with one of the tournament favourites, Fiji.

Wales have slipped down the pecking order after last weekend’s tournament in Dubai after being knocked out in the Cup by Argentina and South Africa in the Plate semis.

Paul John’s men are now in seventh equal place on the points table and although Portugal and Zimbabwe shouldn’t pose too many problems, tournament pacesetters Fiji are an altogether different proposition.

Fiji beat New Zealand in the opening round in Australia to claim the Gold Coast Sevens title while picking up 17 points in Dubai for a total of 39 while Wales have 23.

“The boys are keen to get going after a disappointing second day in Dubai,” reflected Paul  John. “We thought we had a real opportunity to do well but things didn’t happen for us.

“But to pick up 23 points after just two rounds is pretty good. Hopefully we can build on that over the next couple of days to end the year on a positive note.”
