Wales completed the pool stage second in their group behind South Africa but ahead of France and Uruguay.

On the second day of action Wales lost a closely fought Cup quarter final against Fiji 12-5. Wales’ key playmaker Richie Pugh was disappointed to lose against the South Sea Islanders.

“I was really gutted for the boys because I thought we deserved something from the game. The boys put in a huge effort and to come away empty handed was a big blow,” he said.

That defeat sent Wales into the Plate competition on the third and final day’s action in the Sam Boyd Stadium.

With automatic advancement to the semi finals, Wales came up against Kenya and at 7-7 at halftime, were only minutes away of making the final. But Kenya stepped on the gas in the second half to come away with a 22-14 victory.

Richard Smith and Kristian Phillips scored the tries with Alex Walker adding two conversions.

The next legs are in Hong Kong (23-25 March) and Japan (31 March-1April). Wales face a daunting prospect in Hong Kong as they have been drawn alongside series leaders New Zealand, third placed South Africa and big hitting USA.
