But five months later the Cardiff Blues star racked up 11 points as Wales roared to their third RBS 6 Nations Slam in eight seasons with a pulsating victory over their Auckland heart-breakers.
Halfpenny converted Alex Cuthbert’s try and slotted three penalties, including one from 51 metres, to firmly bury his World Cup demons.
“I was so excited to get the opportunity to kick that long-range penalty and I’m so over the moon to have taken it. I couldn’t have struck it better and to see it go over, especially after what happened in New Zealand, was a great moment for me – I just wish I did the same then!” admitted Halfpenny.
“But it’s the best day of my life. I feel so honoured and privileged to be part of what we have achieved. All credit to the boys, everyone has worked so hard for it and to get the final reward is absolutely unbelievable.”
Halfpenny admitted Wales were forced to dig deep to edge the nail-biting encounter and paid tribute to the strength in depth of Warren Gatland’s squad. His international attention now turns to the Barbarians and a three-Test tour of Australia in the summer – but only after a well-deserved weekend of celebrations.
“Every single player deserves a giant pat on the back, it’s a team effort and I’m glad to have played a part. The first game against Ireland was key for us, getting that win was elementary for our confidence,” added Halfpenny.
“That was huge for us and of course the away win against England was phenomenal. It’s been a huge effort throughout from all the boys.
“It’s been the same backline all the way through, but all credit to the boys who have come off the bench and made an impact. It was right to the wire against France and tight all the way. We had to keep it close and grind out the win. I’m so chuffed that we managed it.
“We’re on top of the world right now and going out to Australia in the summer is going to be huge.”
