The fullback kicked three penalties and converted a Mike Webb try as his side came back from 14-0 down to take home the trophy.
A see-saw first period saw the Newts go into a quick-fire 14-0 lead with two tries from Rhys Walbeof before Glyncoch responded through Webb and the boot of Baggs. A scrappy, pointless second-half ensued but it was Glyncoch who held out despite New Tredegar dominating possession for most of the second period.
Glyncoch’s triumph was all the more remarkable after they went 14-0 down inside 20 minutes. Barely two minutes had gone when a blind side break saw the Glyncoch defence short of numbers. Lock Steve Osborne fed wing Walbeof who went in under the posts. Fly-half Craig Thomas added the extras to give Tredegar the perfect start.
And it soon got better. From a scrum inside their own half the Tredegar backs broke with ease with the ball once again finding its way to Walbeof. The young winger showed a devastating turn of pace to go over in the left hand corner.
Thomas converted from the touchline to put his side 14-0 up, a lead they thoroughly deserved. Staring at a two try deficit, Glyncoch could have easily have let their heads drop but they rallied impressively.
A lovely break from outside-half Lee Godard saw the league six central champions earn a penalty on the left hand touchline. Opting to kick to touch, their boldness was soon rewarded. From a lineout, an impressive forward effort saw prop Mike Webb go over under the posts. Baggs added the conversion to narrow the gap to seven.
Baggs was at the heart of the action and he produced a brilliant 60 metre break from which his side eventually earned a penalty which he knocked over with ease. Glyncoch were growing into the game and from a quick tap penalty, Baggs kicked another three points to cut New Tredegar’s lead to just one point as the interval approached. And on the stroke of half-time the full-back added another penalty from just inside the opposition half to send his side into the lead for the first time.
A scrappy start to the second period saw both sides struggle to maintain meaningful possession. The Newts had the first chance to get points on the board but Thomas pushed a long-range penalty attempt wide of the right hand post before Baggs missed a similarly difficult penalty. But the second-half remained pointless as Glyncoch held firm and added the Bowl to the league title they secured earlier in the season.
