Team GB Sevens on the agenda

The first steps on the road to rugby’s return to the Olympic fold in Rio in 2016 were taken at Twickenham today as discussions opened on how the Team GB Sevens squads will be selected.

Rugby Union was last an Olympic sport way back in 1924, when the USA won the gold medal by beating France in Paris. That was the last of four tournaments at 15-a-side.

The IOC voted to include Rugby Sevens in the 2016 Games in Rio at their session in Copenhagen in 2009. There will be one entry for Team GB, rather than individual teams from the Home Unions, and the meeting at Twickenham was aimed at finding out how to select the team.

A joint statement from the Home Unions read: “The Chief Executives and other representatives of the Home Unions met at Twickenham today to discuss Team GB’s (men and women) participation in the 2016 Olympic Games. The sport’s inclusion is a great opportunity to further grow the game at national and international level. As with previous collaborations, the meeting was positive and progressive and discussions will continue.”
