The Welsh Rugby Union has launched a new Steward Training Programme to inspire rugby club volunteers across Wales to upskill and gain a nationally recognised qualification for their services to community rugby.

The two-day training programme is free of charge to existing club volunteers and aims to teach participants how to prepare for spectator events, respond to injuries and emergencies and control and monitor crowds at rugby matches.

The course follows the NVQ for Stewarding at Spectator Events and will be delivered at the Millennium Stadium over one weekend at the end of September.

The volunteers will then get the opportunity to put their new-found knowledge into practice undertaking stewarding duties on two separate occasions during Wales’ Dove Men+Care Autumn Series at the home of Welsh sport or at another sporting venue.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for existing club stewards to gain free professional training to improve the services they provide to their local rugby clubs on a regular basis,” said WRU Head of Group Compliance Julie Paterson.

“The club stewards give up their spare time to ensure rugby matches take place all over Wales each week and the WRU is delighted to offer the new steward training programme free of charge to acknowledge their hard work.

“The Club Operations Team has written to all club secretaries urging them to get their applications in as soon as possible and before the deadline on Wednesday 5 September.”

Fifty places are available for the course which will be run by safety and security managers at the Millennium Stadium. The stadium employs and provides training for 1100 stewards and regularly requires up to 750 security staff at stadium events.

All new training application forms must be submitted with a letter of support from the relevant club before the application deadline on Wednesday 5 September. The process will initially be open to a maximum of two applicants per club.

WRU Club Support Advisor, Claire Thomas, is available throughout the application process on 02920 822438 to answer any questions regarding the Steward Training Programme.
