The club has always been well noted for its encouragement in mini and junior rugby and now the club is showing the same enthusiasm in the girls’ side too. The team was started after a few of the girls watched the men one afternoon and they approached who is now their team representative, Aimee Summers, to try and put this team together.
What started out as just a group of six team members has blossomed into many girls coming along to have a go and many of them stay and continue to show amazing dedication to the team.
Proudest moment: Watching the Welsh women’s team at the Six Nations against Italy and then the having a chat with them when they came over after the game. It was a huge inspiration.
Hopes for the season: To continue the success from last year and hopefully continue to improve as a side.
Favourite Welsh Player:Â Welsh back row forward Lisa Newton.
Best aspect of women’s rugby: To show it can be done, it’s important the women’s game continues to grow.
How did you get involved in the game: After watching the boys play rugby one cold Sunday morning a few girls wanted to have a go and we went about assembling a team.
Why rugby: The Gilfach valley has always been fully into club rugby what with its first team in the SWALEC League One East so we wondered why we couldn’t join in the flow. Such a small valley has proven to have not just male star players but also female stars too.
