The flanker struggled to hit his previous heights during Wales’ summer tour, having sat the previous two months on the sidelines with a thigh injury.
But he has impressed in the opening weeks of the season with the Blues and knows he has to get back to his best ahead of the autumn internationals
”I let myself down in Australia,” said Warburton. “I thought I did okay in the third Test, when I had two full games under my belt, I felt fit and ready to go but then I took a bang to my head and couldn’t carry on.
“That motivates me and even though I had five weeks off and didn’t think about rugby, I wanted to rectify it, get back on the field and play like I did in the Six Nations and six months ago in the World Cup.
“We’re getting to a stage in Welsh rugby where reputation won’t count for much because there’s so much strength in depth.
You can afford to drop a few players and someone else will come through and surprise a few people.”
But at the moment Warburton’s sole focus is on performing for the Blues. He played eight matches the region last season and is determined to make a bigger contribution in the current campaign.
“I feel like I owe the Blues,” said Warburton.
“I didn’t play much rugby for them last year. But I love the Blues, I’m a Cardiff boy, I grew up watching them and playing for them is great. I owe them a few more performances this year.”
