Biggar relishes Flood battle

Dan Biggar is relishing his personal battle with England’s “under-rated” Toby Flood in Saturday’s Heineken Cup clash against Leicester Tigers.

The Ospreys fly-half has impressed in the opening weeks of the season and has been tipped for a Wales recall after missing out on the RBS 6 Nations and summer tour.

But he is determined to lay down a marker against Flood – someone he ranks as one of the best in Europe.

“Personally I rate him as one of the best in Great Britain. He doesn’t get quite the credit he deserves,” said Biggar.

“He’s a great player, perfect for Leicester. He knows their game plan inside out, gives them what they want, and that’s directness and honesty.

“He knows exactly where people need to be and that’s very underrated in a fly half. He’s one of the best in Europe and I’m looking forward to a head-to-head with him.

“Perhaps there are similarities between myself and Toby but I’d love to be as good as him. If I can get to his level I will be happy but I’ve still got a lot to work on and learn.

“I suppose we’re both authoritative in some sort of way and t will be a great battle between us. If our pack gets on the front foot it will be a difficult day for him and vice-versa.”

It will be the first time the Ospreys have travelled to Welford Road since sharing a 32-all European draw in 2009.

And while the famous ground has been overlooked as a potential venue for the 2015 World Cup, Biggar has revealed it is his favourite stadium to play in.

“Welford Road is the best rugby ground you can play in. You’re in the ground an hour before the game and there’s 10,000 people in there. When it’s full there’s 24,000 people there – passionate, intelligent rugby supporters.

“The size of the pitch hasn’t helped but in terms of atmosphere and tradition you won’t find many better grounds.

“But with all the respect we have for Leicester we are going up there to really try to ruffle a few feathers.”

Rob Howley will name his squad for the Dove Men Series, where Wales face Argentina, New Zealand, Samoa and Australia at the Millennium Stadium, on Monday and the latest round of European action is the last chance to impress.

Biggar admits he hopes to win further international honours but he insists his main focus is in Ospreylia and that anything else would be a bonus.

“You’re first port of call is your club rugby, they pay your wages, they give you your chance in rugby and its down to you to repay the money and commitment they’ve shown.

“If an international recall comes that’s brilliant, but that’s really in the back of my head at the moment.”
