Drovers face Scottish test

Unbeaten in all seven of their league and cup games so far this season, Llandovery face what may be their toughest fixture so far this season when they take on Melrose.

The Drovers travel to Scotland for Saturday’s British & Irish Cup clash on the back of a narrow win over Nottingham in the opening round of cup fixtures last weekend.

Melrose meanwhile secured a narrow win over Doncaster, running out 30-29 winners and as the home team, go into the match as strong favourites.

Llandovery could not have had a better start to the season but know the game in Scotland is vital if they want to progress to the Cup’s latter stages.

Last week’s game against Nottingham was the only time this season where the Drovers have failed to secure maximum bonus points with head coach Lyndon Lewis disappointed at his side’s failure to convert chances into points.

The Premiership leaders had plenty of opportunities against Nottingham but only managed to score three tries.

“We are looking forward to our first visit to Melrose and we will go up there with the intent of playing a multi-phase, high intensity game,” said Lewis.

“We were pleased last week that the ball in play time was 43 minutes. This type of intensity can only be good when preparing players for their next step into regional rugby,” he added.

“The players enjoyed measuring themselves against a side close to the top of the English championship last week,” added Llandovery assistant coach Euros Evans.

“This week provides an opportunity to measure ourselves against one of the top club sides in Scotland.

“We know we need to be at the top of our game to win away this Saturday”
