Gavin Henson could not help London Welsh to victory on his competitive debut but his performance has been hailed by head coach Lyn Jones.

The double Grand Slammer, who admits he is in the last chance saloon, made his comeback after fracturing his cheekbone playing against the Scarlets in a pre-season friendly.

And he showed glimpses of his undoubted capabilities with a try-scoring pass and 13-point haul as Saracens edged to a 28-23 win in Oxford.

“I thought for his first game back in who knows how long, his performance was very good. He was hugely influential,” said Jones.

“We all saw the pass and thought ‘what the hell’s he doing?’ Then we all thought ‘oh, that’s the way’.

“There’s the player on the field, the player in training and the player in the clubhouse,” said Jones, Henson’s one-time Ospreys coach.

“At the moment he’s ticked all the boxes.”

Saracens dominated territory and possession but managed just one try as London Welsh took them to the wire.

Jones admitted his side’s performance was not good enough but he was delighted to pick up what could become a crucial losing bonus-point.

“To play as badly as we did and come away with a losing bonus point is a plus. Saracens are a quality side and they played very well.”
