The home side eventually ran out narrow 21-19 winners but led 15-0 at one stage as Neath Port Talbot rallied impressively.
Centre Owen Howe scored 13 points in Llandovery’s victory leaving head coach Iestyn Thomas delighted.
“We have come a long way in the last four weeks, I’m very, very pleased,” he said.
“We’ve got a lot of improvements to make. It’s a long season and we’ll keep our feet on the ground. There’s a long way to go.”
It was Llandovery, who came into the match after scoring 74 points against Coleg Sir Benfro last week, who started the match the stronger. Their powerful forwards were to the fore in the early stages but despite dominating both territory and possession, the game remained scoreless after 10 minutes.
An early penalty effort for Llandovery went wide but it was only a matter of time before the home side went ahead.
After the Llandovery forwards made ground, a break down the blind side by Daf Hughes saw the hooker chip ahead. The loose ball was not collected and Llandovery made the most of it with Howe collecting the ball to dive over. The centre then added the conversion and a penalty as his side made a fast start.
Neath Port Talbot were struggling to have any influence on the game and when they did have an opportunity to get the scoreboard moving, fly-half Luke Price dragged his penalty attempt wide.
And they were made to pay when after another free-flowing move involving both forwards and backs, Llandovery winger Jedd Evans touched down in the corner. Howe missed the conversion but the home side led 15-0.
With the game slipping away from them, Neath Port Talbot were shocked into action. After sustained pressure on the Llandovery line, the visitors won a kickable penalty but instead opted to kick to touch. And they were rewarded when centre Joe Thomas crashed over under the posts. Price added the extra two points to make it 15-7.
This was not the end of the first-half action though as Howe kicked another penalty for Llandovery before Daf Howells responded with a brilliant solo effort for Neath Port Talbot.
With a number of defenders to beat, the Osprey’s academy winger made the try look easy as he went over in the corner. Price added the conversion to make it 18-14 at the break.
And in a low scoring second half, Llandovery just held on to their lead. The home side again dominated the early stages but could not extend their advantage. Neath Port Talbot responded when the ball was worked across the pitch between forwards and backs for winger Jordan Adlee to cross. Price missed the conversion but his side led for the first time.
With the game hanging in the balance, one score was going to decide the game and it was Howe who sealed the win for Llandovery with a late penalty.
In the other college games which took place on Wednesday, Coleg Morgannwg failed to make it two wins from two as they were beaten 36-10 by Coleg Sir Gar.
The Carmarthenshire college ran in five tries as they converted a 22-3 lead at half-time into a comprehensive victory by fulltime.
Elsewhere, Gower college outscored Bridgend College by four tries to three but still fell to a 27-22 defeat. Fullback Sam Evans gave Gower an early lead and they led up to the hour mark only to throw the game away.
Bridgend winger Ryan Russell crossed for a try and when fly-half Josh White added the conversiona and a penalty soon after, the game was up for Gower despite their fine start.
