Bedwas aim to topple Gwent rivals

Bedwas entertain Newport at the Bridge Field tomorrow night looking to stay top of the Principality Premiership.

Having won at Carmarthen for the first time in many years last week, table-topping Bedwas will be keen to ensure their unbeaten home record is maintained when they take on near neighbours Newport.

The back line sees several changes to the side that started at Carmarthen. Stuart Thomas is recalled at full back, Matthew Pewtner switches from centre to right wing and Scott Williams comes back into the centre against his former club. Scrum half Tom Rowlands is also recalled to the starting side.

Up front there is only one change from the eight that started at Carmarthen with Sam Feehan coming into the back row in place of Tom Organ who starts on the replacements bench.

Newport come into the game in a good run of form and Bedwas head coach Steve Law is expecting a tough test.

“Newport are unbeaten in their last five matches and as ever will be formidable opponents,” he said.

“The boys have trained hard and we are all expecting a full bloodied Gwent derby. This team is taking one game at a time and everyone is keeping their feet on the ground and taking nothing for granted.

Law added: “On behalf of everyone at Bedwas I would like to congratulate Ross Wardle who this week signed a full time contract with the Dragons which will run until the end of the 2014 season.”

Wardle’s success is just reward for an impressive season and shows the extent of talent on show at Bridge Field.

Though they will expect a tough game at the home of the league leaders, Newport are on a bit of a roll themselves having won their last five matches.

They were desperately unlucky to lose to Bedwas at Rodney Parade earlier this season, playing three-quarters of the match with only 14 men. And despite playing some expansive rugby, Newport were stung when Bedwas scored two long range tries to sneak a 25-26 win.

They ring the changes for tomorrow’s game. Wing Mike Poole gets another start following his second half run out at the Gnoll while young centre Dominic Franchi, who made his debut at the Gnoll, also makes a start.

The league’s leading try scorer Elliot Frewen is on the bench as is Craig Everett. Dai Pattison returns from a ban and prop Dan Mathews is in line to make his debut.
