Hibbard braced for tough week

Richard Hibbard expects a fierce week of training as Wales bid to bounce back from their disappointing loss to Argentina.

They face Samoa in the next clash of the Dove Men Series at the Millennium Stadium on Friday night.

Wales are desperate to make amends from their loss to the Pumas and Hibbard’s Samoan teammate at the Ospreys Kahn Fotuali’I has already upped the ante.

“He’s given me quite a cheeky message,” said Hibbard. “It’s going to be another tough game, a physical battle.

“We beat ourselves against Argentina. It was a perfect warm-up for the rest of the autumn series,” he said.

“We definitely can’t panic but it’s nothing we can’t put right. We’ll be looking to hit lumps out of each other in training this week.

“Argentina were aggressive physically, in attack and defence. They tackled and carried hard.

“Samoa is going to be a big game for us. This series just gets more physical and there’s going to be some big, hard hits. I think they will target us big time.”

Hibbard was a second-half replacement against the Pumas but he hopes to force Rob Howley’s hand to start against the big-hitting South Sea Islanders.

“I’m doing everything they ask in training. I’m ticking every box and hope a place comes my way,” said the Aberavon product.

“Don’t get me wrong, I would love to start.”

If given the nod that could see him pack down alongside Ospreys team-mate Aaron Jarvis, who made his debut in the defeat to the South Americans.

Hibbard has been impressed with the way Jarvis has filled the void left by the injured Adam Jones at the Liberty Stadium this season but moreso by his performance on the international stage on Saturday.

“Aaron was excellent. His scrummaging was superb and he won the first turnover – and that’s including the back row!” added Hibbard.

“He showed he’s not a chink in the armour, he’s played well this season.”
