Russia are one of five international teams taking part in the IRB International Rugby Series at Eirias Park.
In a double header on Friday 9 November, Tonga take on Canada at 6pm followed by Russia against USA. On Saturday 17 November, three matches are set to take place. RGC 1404, who are flying high in SWALEC Division One East, play their home game against Penallta at 2.30pm, with Tonga playing USA at 6pm followed by Russia against Canada.
“Along with Romania, Russia are usually classed just behind the likes of Fiji, Canada and the USA so we really need to get some results against the USA and Canada in Colwyn Bay over the next couple of weeks in order to try to climb the rankings,” said Jones.
“Our Rugby World Cup qualification starts in earnest in the New Year so while I’ve experimented with a large number of players during the past 12 months, we’re bringing our best available players to Wales to really try and make a mark.
“Everyone was disappointed with our defeat by six points to the USA at the Rugby World Cup so there will be extra motivation when we face them next Friday night.
“We have two tough Tests, with Canada the following Saturday but we are determined to do well,” he added.
“It’s fantastic from a personal point of view to be playing some international games in Wales. We would love to play some home Tests in one of our rugby heartlands – Siberia, Moscow or Krasnyabor but the weather prevents that so for me, playing in wales is certainly the next best thing.
“I hope the people of north Wales will come out and support the team in red – Russia!
“During my time with Sale Sharks, we regularly played at Eirias with the A side so I’m looking forward to going back there. We are leaving Moscow tomorrow (Saturday) and have a preparation game against Oxford University on Sunday.
“It’s the end of the domestic season for our players so while it’s great to have them together as a squad, it’s important to keep them fresh for the challenges ahead over the coming fortnight.”
Tickets for the games start at £11 and are available from www.venuecymru.co.uk or by calling the Eirias ticket office on 01492 872000.
