Paddy Power Match Preview
Wales v New Zealand
November 24 2012, Millennium Stadium

The Dove Men Series hasn’t gone to plan for Wales with a couple of disappointing results but in a roundabout way, a visit from New Zealand is exactly what is required.

It’ll be a tough challenge, but one that can’t but motivate the players to improve on recent displays. Paddy Power, Official Betting Supplier of the Welsh Rugby Union, make the All Blacks overwhelming 1/18 favourites for the match with Saturday’s hosts a generous 8/1 to upset the apple cart.

The Handicap betting may be more tempting for Welsh supporters. The reigning RBS Six Nations champions are available +18 points at odds of 10/11 to beat the reigning world and Rugby Championship champions.

A Paddy Power spokesperson said: “If complacency was partially to blame for the defeats to Argentina and Samoa, then it will be absent when the All Blacks come to town. The Welsh players know the size of the task at hand and know there is no better side in the world at punishing a lack of concentration.”

The world champions haven’t been beaten since they were crowned as the world’s best last November and they’ve scored at least 40 points in four of their last five Tests against European opposition. That said, Wales have managed to provide the All Blacks with some of their sterner tests when they visit the northern hemisphere. Wales were a commendable 12 and seven points off New Zealand the last couple of times the All Blacks came to the Millennium Stadium and those results would suggest the +18 point handicap is in the hosts’ favour.

“Recent form hasn’t been superb, but Wales do have a better recent history against the All Blacks than most RBS 6 Nations teams. I’m expecting a better performance this week and based on recent history, the Alternative Handicap of Wales +12 points at 6/4 is worth a punt,” added the Paddy Power spokesperson.

The Welsh backs haven’t been as influential as many would have hoped so far in the Dove Men Series but with such talent, it’s surely only a matter of time before they get going. Jamie Roberts is the only player currently in the Wales squad to have scored a try against New Zealand and the centre is 33/1 to be First Tryscorer on Saturday. Against such a potent All Blacks attack, that may be a touch optimistic but there’s a bit of value in backing him To Score A Try Anytime at 6/1 or to be First Wales Tryscorer at 10/1.

The spokesperson also highlighted the excellent promotion Paddy Power are running for Saturday’s big matches. “The Tryscorer markets look extra appealing this weekend because we’re running a great Money-Back Special on this match along with England v South Africa and Ireland v Argentina matches. If Number 10 scores a try at any time in any of those matches we will refund all losing Tryscorer bets on that match.”

“There are some quality players wearing the number 10 jerseys, so I wouldn’t be surprised to be landed with a big refund come Saturday evening. That would really make going for my weekly curry taste a little more bitter!”
