Record breaker Davies

He’s controlled things for Aberavon for more than a decade, becoming the highest ever points scorer in semi-professional rugby along the way.

But now fly-half Jamie Davies is on the verge of breaking yet more records. Ahead of Aberavon’s Boxing Day fixture with Neath, Davies is just one try short of 100 for the club and another 68 points from reaching 4,000 for the Wizards.

The records are just reward for a man whose rugby career has been spent mainly in the Welsh Premiership but also included a Wales Youth cap and two appearances for the Barbarians.

“I actually only found out at training that I was within reach of these records. It’s unbelievable really,” said Davies.

“The seasons go by so quickly, you don’t realise how many appearances you’ve made or how many points you’ve scored and it suddenly rushes up on you.

“It’s quite amazing and it’s not something I ever thought I’d do and I’m very, very proud of the achievement.”

Davies has been a mainstay in an Aberavon side used to punching above their weight. This season though, the Wizards have struggled with just one win from their 11 games so far.

“I have never experienced a poor run myself but winning is a habit and at the moment we can’t seem to get that win and break that losing habit,” Davies added.

“We’ve been improving though and hopefully in the games over the New Year we can get back on track.

“We’ve got two home games this month with Neath on Boxing Day and we’ve got to win those games. Hopefully we can do that.”

The clash with the Welsh All Blacks will see Davies break yet another record, with the game at the Talbot Athletic Ground set to be his 400th for the club.

With the records tumbling, it must be difficult for Davies to pick a highlight from such a long career. Not so, apparently.

“Being Aberavon’s highest ever points scorer is definitely my career highlight. When I achieved that it was a very proud moment,” Davies commented.

“Reaching 100 tries would be great and I couldn’t be happier with that. It’s definitely not something I could have envisaged happening when I started.”

After more than 10 years at Aberavon and a host of records, you’d think Davies would be thinking about hanging up his boots. But the fly half is determined to keep going, for next season at least.

“I get the mick taken out of me by the boys for being old but as long as I can stay away from injuries I’ll keep going,” Davies said.

“I definitely want to play next year though I’ve found once you reach your thirties, you start to pick up niggling injuries which aren’t easy to get rid of.

“But being record points scorer is something I’m very proud of.”
