The Ospreys second-row missed the first two matches of Wales’ Six Nations campaign following a shoulder injury before returning off the bench against Italy.
Yet despite having 68 international caps and a British Lions tour and World Cup under his belt, Jones knows he cannot take anything for granted after three months out.
Jones said: “I’m well aware that if I don’t perform it’s just easy to be out of this team as it is to be selected.”
Following Jones’ injury, Wales were in a desperate position with fellow second-rowers Luke Charteris and Bradley Davies also unavailable.
It led to uncapped Newport Gwent Dragons lock Andrew Coombs receiving his first international call and he has since proved to be the surprise package of the tournament, being Wales’ top line-out catcher so far in the championship.
Jones sympathied with Coombs and added: “He’s being doing a great job for the Dragons and he’s come here to do a similar job for Wales and stood up to the mark.
“In fairness, he was the first person to come up and congratulate me on my selection on Tuesday.
“It’s not a nice place to be but ultimately you’ve got to be happy for yourself and move forward.”
