The Llanelli Scarlet has impressed from the bench so far this campaign and featured in the defeat to Ireland and the subsequent victories over France and Italy.
And although he may be gaining a reputation as something of a super sub, Owens wants his hands on the red number two jersey.
“Richard (Hibbard) has been in outstanding form and deserves his first choice spot,” he admitted.
“It’s up to me to keep working hard and keep putting performances in. It’s good for the team to have strength in depth – we’ve got three very good hookers in the squad.
“I’ve spent quite a lot of time on the bench in my career but my ambition is to be first choice and I’ll keep working hard.”
After the Welsh scrum dominated their Italian opponents in the 9-26 win in Rome, Owens is hoping for a repeat at Murrayfield this weekend.
But with two wins and one defeat from their three games so far, Scotland are level on points with Rob Howley’s men and Owens is wary of the threat they pose.
He added: “They were maybe a bit unlucky not to get a result in Cardiff last year. They stuck at it and put us under a lot of pressure.
“They got two good wins against Italy and Ireland so they’ve got momentum and they’re in the hunt for the title like we are.
“Richie Gray and Jim Hamilton are very good at disrupting the ball but hopefully if we’re accurate with our jumping and throwing we’ll have the options to provide plenty of ball to the backs.”
Former Wales coach Scott Johnson has clearly had an impact with a Scottish side who have looked dangerous, especially against England and Italy.
And with a good blend of youth and experience, Owens knows Wales must pay them the respect they deserve.
“They’re a very good side. They’ve got players with pace – Tim Visser, Sean Maitland and Stuart Hogg and they’ve got experienced guys like Sean Lamont and Greig Laidlaw,” he said.
“They play a lot of good rugby and they’ve got big men in the pack. They’re dangerous and they’ve been dangerous for a long time without getting the results they perhaps deserve.
“But they went to Australia and won last summer, so we’ve got huge respect for Scotland. They’re a great team.”
