Wales Students look ahead to England

Wales Students captain Kyle Tayler says his side are in good spirits following their 35-17 victory over Germany in Heidelberg.

As part of the development of student rugby in Wales, last season saw the re-introduction of the Wales Students National Team for the first time since 2004.

And following the win in Germany, Tayler’s side can now look ahead to a clash with England at Rodney Parade a week on Sunday.

“It was a great win against Germany and exactly what we needed,” said the Cardiff Metropolitan student.

“It was good to get student rugby back on track with a win and hopefully it will get it moving forward.

“It was a tough game but we were the fitter team and that proved to be vital, especially in the second half. It was testament to the training we’ve done – it’s made us a much better team.

“We built the pressure on them and that paid off.”

With an increased emphasis placed on the importance of the student game in Wales, the squad have been training together since January ahead of their competitive fixtures.

And if the win over the senior German side is anything to go by, it seems to be working.

“Training has brought us closer together as a group – it’s meant we’re more professional and have bonded as a group,” added the flanker.

“It’s even better now after the win in Germany. It allowed players from different institutions to bond together and it’s a really tight group.”

The win in Heidelberg saw Rhodri Davies, Steffan Jones, Owen Thomas and Gareth Thompson all cross for tries in an impressive performance.

They, along with the other squad members, will be aiming to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Ross Wardle and Tom Williams who have gone on to play regional rugby after playing for Wales Students last year.

“Student rugby is massive and it’s an opportunity to show what you can do at international level,” said Tayler.

“Last year three or four players went on to regional rugby so hopefully with the improved set up we’ve got this year, we can echo or even better that.”

And after captaining his country to a win in Germany, the Wales skipper can’t wait to lead his side out again against England.

“It’s every player’s dream to captain your country and it was great for me and my family and friends,” he added.

“To wear the Welsh jersey and lead out the team is something I’ll never forget.

“There’s a good buzz in camp now. England beat us last year but we have prepared so much better this time. We definitely want to produce a performance to be proud of next week.”
