Representatives from the successful Rhondda Cynon Taf clubs went along to the Millennium Stadium for a special awards ceremony, organised by the WRU and the Council’s Sport department.
Safe Sport is a sports club’s way of demonstrating that they practice within the guidelines of the National Governing Body and Rhondda Cynon Taf Council. Safe Sport is a recommended set of standards that all sports providers operate within to ensure they are appropriately safeguarding their members.
Claire Thomas, Club Support Advisor- Volunteering for the WRU, said: “The WRU welcomed the opportunity to work with a local authority to promote an accreditation process which built on information clubs in the area had already submitted.
“It’s essential to the WRU that all volunteers in rugby are supported and recognised for their contribution to the game.”
Cllr Robert Bevan, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Cabinet Member for Sustainable Development, Leisure and Tourism, said: “I am delighted that so many of our local sports clubs and organisations have now been officially recognised with Safe Sport status.
“Safe Sport was first launched by the Council’s Sport RCT in November 2012 as part of the Council’s successful Leisure for Life campaign. We now have 42 clubs and organisations which have achieved Safe Sport accreditation and more than 20 clubs working towards this award.
“The Council is working in partnership with the Welsh Rugby Union and we are delighted with the success of this scheme.
“On behalf of the Council, I would like to congratulate all the club officials and volunteers for their hard work in providing safe rugby opportunities for thousands of children across Rhondda Cynon Taf.”
