Thumping win sees Trefil crowned champions

Trefil RFC have celebrated their crowning as Division 6 East winners with a presentation at home after taking the trophy with a thumping 74-0 away win at Malpas.

The team won 12 of their 14 games, finishing with 56 points overall, and scored 75 tries on their route to the top. They gathered at their HQ in the former quarrying village on Friday, April 26, to celebrate their victory and finally get their hands on their silverware, presented by WRU representative Mal Beynon.

The high-scoring team is delighted to be moving up to Division 5, said Club Secretary Howard Morris. “We won the Worthington Cup at the Millennium Stadium two years running in 2009 and 2010, but nothing since.”

He credits new coaches Darren Foxhall, Phillip Harris and Robin Davies – all ex-players for Trefil – for getting the team to the top slot, coupled with the fact that some of the younger players have come through to turn out with the senior team.

“I couldn’t single anybody out as a player – it is very much a comradeship and they’ve all been great,” says Mr Morris. ”It’s very much a club with tradition, and sons follow their fathers into it.”
