One of the oldest clubs in Wales, Treherberet RFC was established at the head of the Rhondda Valley in 1874.
With the move to Treherbert RFC’s present ground Tynewydd Park in 1957, a new clubhouse was sought. The club moved into Ty Draw, an ex-miners’ institute which was officially opened by Dickie Jeeps in 1963. Shortly after, floodlights and a stand were erected through the joint efforts of the committee, members and players.
Treherbert have won many trophies over the years, beginning with The Glamorgan League title in 1902 with their most recent success the Mid District Cup in 2000.
Friday night’s dinner is a celebration of the time spent at Tynewydd Park and with the club continuing to be at the heart of the local community, thanks to Welsh Rugby Unions funding, it is truly a celebration worth holding.
“The club is in the centre of one of the most deprived areas in south Wales,” said Treherbert Committee member Ned Edwards.
“We are a community club and the WRU funding has been vital to us in all manner of ways.”
Recognising their responsibility to the area, Treherbert have recently received Facilities Funding from the WRU which helped fund the cost of new floodlighting at Tynewydd Park. This has been a huge boost to the playing and training capacity of the club and has helped to attract school, district and regional games to the ground.
“The funding has allowed us to grow as a club and if bad weather causes matches to be delayed or cancelled, we can now play them midweek thanks to our floodlights,” added Mr Edwards.
“We are looking to be a community club who are not just helping with the rugby side of things but also with other activities in the local area by using our facilities.”
“Treherbert have actively worked with the WRU Club Operations Team to progress their club through proactive planning and volunteer recruitment,” said Claire Thomas WRU Club Support Advisor – Volunteering.
“The first step of this process was successfully securing Facilities Foundation Grant funding for replacement training lights at their ground. We now look forward to continuing to work with Treherbert into the future.”
With the club continuing to grow, Friday’s formal dinner is both a way of celebrating the past and looking to the future.
Guests to the dinner include former presidents of the WRU Dennis Gethin and Des Barnett, WRU District representatives, Ray Wilton and Humphrey Evans and Mid District President, Mike Harrison.
