Bedwas announce new signings

With preparations for next season’s Principality Premiership underway, Bedwas have been busy re-signing the majority of last year’s squad as they look to build on what was a hugely successful campaign.

Steve Law guided his side to fourth place last year, missing out on a play-off place on the final day of the regular season as they were beaten at home in a high-scoring encounter by Llandovery.

That defeat aside, Bedwas packed a real punch and surprised many teams, particularly at Bridge Field, throughout the year. And as they look to emulate that next season, Law has added a number of men to strengthen his squad.

The players brought into the squad include loose head prop Brinley Toms, who has been playing in the Championship with Cardiff Met, and will train full time with the Dragons as well as playing for Bedwas.

Also from Cardiff Met is back rower Ollie Edwards who will suit Bedwas with his no frills approach to the game. Other additions to the pack include second row Matthew Screech while hooker Richard Wilkes returns to the club after several years with Carmarthen Quins. He is a proven Premiership player and offers great experience to Law and his coaching staff.

“We have made some quality signings with the aim of increasing the squad size for the coming season, providing more depth and competition for places which creates the right environment to build for success,” said Law.

“Our objective is to take us a step further and finish in a play-off position, which was agonisingly missed by the slimmest of margins this year.

“There is no time to cry over what might have been. We need to get up, dust ourselves down and rise to the challenge of another tough season.”

Joe Mills, Dan Crimmins, Rhys Downes, Harley Thompson, Andy Humberstone, Dan Deardon, Steve Cullen, Elliott Jones and Ryan Evans have also all signed up at Bedwas leaving the club looking forward to the start of the new season.

Chairman Mark Lewis added: “The test for us now is to not only emulate what was a great season for Bedwas but to better it.

“Our expectations are high for this season and so they should be. We look forward to welcoming back our members and supporters for the new season and hope to see many more turn out from the community.”
