Sam hopes to impress with Wales U20

Sam Davies is aiming to use the Junior World Championship as a stepping-stone to his senior career.

The Ospreys fly-half, son of former Wales and Scarlets star Nigel, has had little opportunity to impress at regional level due to the presence of Dan Biggar and Matthew Morgan at the Liberty Stadium.

But he is hoping to impress as Wales Under 20 kick-off their campaign against Samoa in Nantes tomorrow.

“I just want to play as well as I can and see if that’s enough to get me some matches,” said Davies.

“I’m reaching a big point in my career. If I can have a good World Cup, I’d be looking to get quite a bit of game-time next season.

“Hopefully, off the back of a few decent displays out here I’ll get that opportunity. Then it’s a case of taking whatever chances come my way.”

Wales Under 20 then take on South Africa and Argentina in further group stage matches.

Danny Wilson’s men finished third in last season’s competition and Davies insists the minimum requirement is to equal that achievement in France.

“Coming third last year was a great achievement, but we don’t want to take any backward steps,” added Davies.

“We know it isn’t going to be easy, particularly against Argentina, but we feel we have a chance of qualifying if we stick to our game-plan and play to potential.

“Our first goal is to get to the semis. Hopefully, we can do better than last year, but it is a huge challenge.

“We have a good squad, with strength in depth in key positions and Pro12 experience. We are going to give it a crack.”

And head coach Wilson is confident the Ospreys rookie has what it takes to spearhead Wales’ campaign.

“Sam is an excellent, game-controlling ten,” said Wilson.

“Not only does he have a great left peg that helps us win territory, he is also mature for his years, a great game-manager and an important leader for us. In this year’s Six Nations he had four excellent performances.

“And while he was a notch or two below against England – still impressive, but not quite at the level he was in the other games – I know he wants to show he can shine at that sort of level.”
