The 24 year old joins the men of Gwent from Cardiff Blues, after just one season away from the Dragons.
Tovey spent two years with the Dragons Academy before joining making his senior debut in April 2008. Equally comfortable at full back and outside half, he has exceptional composure and maturity on the ball and a left boot which makes him a great asset to the side in either position.
After making his Newport RFC debut against Aberavon in 2006 , Tovey became the youngest ever Premiership player for the Black & Ambers.
The versatile back has racked up more records on the way, becoming the first ever Dragons player to score a hat-trick in a competitive match against Ulster in 2009 and then breaking the record for points scored in a match against the Ospreys in the LV= Cup in January 2010, with two conversions and seven penalties to his name.
Dragons Director of Rugby, Lyn Jones said: “I am delighted to welcome Jason back to Gwent. He really impressed me when I had my first coaching stint here. Things haven’t really worked out for him at the Blues but we are looking forward to his return to Gwent and helping him to achieve his full potential.”
Tovey added: “I’m really delighted to be re-joining a rejuvenated Gwent squad, last season proved a difficult one for me personally, but I’m delighted to be working with Lyn again and looking forward to improving my game and helping Gwent get back up the league where they belong.
“I’ve missed playing in front of the Rodney Parade supporters and hope I can add to an exciting and optimistic few years back in Newport.”
