The Gwent side enjoyed a superb run in 2012/13, eventually missing out on the play-offs by the narrowest of margins but causing a number of surprises along the way.
Indeed, their hopes of a play-off place only came to an end on the last day of the regular season as they were edged out in an 11-try thriller at home to Llandovery.
Now, as they look to go one step further this time around, back rower Thomas can’t wait for the new season to start.
“Last year we knew we had a good squad and a good team but we did a lot better than we thought we would,” he said.
“We want to take that into the start of this season now.
“I think we set the bar quite high last season. We know that but we want to keep going and hopefully get a play-off place.
“We were gutted to fall short last season but hopefully with a few new players in we can do it this year.”
Ahead of the new season, where Bedwas will play Pontypridd in the first game of the 2013/14 Principality Premiership, there is of course the Foster’s National Sevens to come first.
And with Bedwas seeing the competition as one they can make a mark in, Thomas is looking forward to the Cardiff Arms Park event.
“We’ve got some real flyers in our team – people like Rory Budina, he skins people for fun in the 15 a side game so I can’t wait to see him play sevens,” he said.
“We look like we’ve got a good squad coming through for this tournament.
“After a full pre-season it will be great to play in this competition before the season starts.
“We might otherwise have had a week off anyway so it will be good to have a blow out and have some fun as well.”
