Touch in north Wales

The popularity of rugby continues to grow in north Wales with Touch an important vehicle in the progression of the overall game.

In North East Wales, Touch has taken off over the last few months. Previously established as a social group of 20 people, a new league has now been implemented with six teams of eight now competing on a Wednesday evening from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at Wrexham Rugby Club.

The format is a round robin tournament with the eventual winners been crowned after 8 weeks of play.

“The Wrexham league provides an opportunity for Touch and rugby to build on existing initiatives within north Wales and make further inroads into this emerging area,” said Matthew Enoch, Development Director for the Wales Touch Association.

He added: “Touch leagues help provide the first step for those who may wish to take up the sport on a more competitive level.

“Participating in the WRU leagues also makes all players eligible for their regional and national Touch squads.”

Elsewhere in north Wales, social leagues have been formed at Colwyn Bay RFC and Abergele RFC. The Colwyn Bay Touch league runs on a Wednesday evening from 7pm to 9pm with the Abergele Touch sessions running on a Sunday from 12pm to 2pm.
