Newport Gwent Dragons new director of rugby Lyn Jones is yet to decide who will captain the region next season.

Lewis Evans led the Men of Gwent last season and Wales lock Andrew Coombs took the captain’s arm band in his absence.

The duo lead the running for the honour this season, while hooker Rhys Thomas is reported to be another leading candidate.

And Jones admits a decision will be made within the next two weeks as the Dragons preparations for the new season intensify.

“We’ve not decided and I will probably name a captain in around ten days’ time,” said Jones.

But Jones has been enthused by the talent at Rodney Parade and reckons the region are a sleeping giant which he aims to unleash.

“Gwent rugby is a sleeping giant and I want to wake it up,” said Jones.

“We want to be able to show all the young players across Gwent that there is a clear pathway to first-class rugby.

“We want to be very open about the opportunities and that we are promoting young local talent as we have seen with the Under-20s.

“I’ve always said rugby is about motivation and we would rather go up the valley and find a local, Welsh a lad, who will give you 100 per cent, than an overseas player who is possibly past his best.”
