The 31-year-old won 13 caps for his country after earning his first call up against Ireland in 2003 but hasn’t featured on the international stage for the past four years.
His summer move to Championship outfit Bristol after four seasons in the Aviva Premiership with Gloucester and London Wasps would appear to make a Welsh recall even more of a challenge but Robinson admits he will never give up on the greatest goal of all.
“Of course I still hold those ambitions. Until I hang up my boots, I’ll always be hoping and dreaming that I’ll get another opportunity,” said Robinson, who scored 42 points in his 10 starts and three replacement appearances for Wales.
“I’m under no illusions that it’s going to be difficult from playing in the Championship but all I’m doing is trying to push myself to be as good as I can and that hasn’t changed from the first year I started.
“I keep striving to improve myself and hope that I’m a better player at the end of the season than I am at the start. If bigger honours come along the way, then happy days. For now it’s about getting a few games under my belt for Bristol and striving to get back in the Premiership.
“I’ve made a few decisions over my career on what I’ve thought is best as a rugby player and a person and sometimes that may not be for the best of getting picked for Wales. But you can only control what’s in your grasp and I always believe that if you go out and play well enough then you’ll get picked.”
Robinson began his career alongside brother Jamie in Cardiff but headed to Kingsholm to join Gloucester in 2009 – a year in which he was tipped as an outside bet to earn a place as the third fly-half on the British & Irish Lions tour of South Africa.
A journey up the M4 to London has now been followed by a move back closer to the border, although Robinson doesn’t have any plans to rejoin a Welsh side after signing up to the long-term objectives of an ambitious Bristol outfit intent on re-establishing themselves as a domestic and European force.
“I’m enjoying my rugby in England. I enjoy living outside of Wales and I’ve only been away for a few years. I’m edging my way back closer to the Severn Bridge, though! I can see the bridge every morning when I drive in from Cheltenham so it’s not a million miles away,” added Robinson.
“I know that this was the right decision to come and try and get this club back to where it should be. I wouldn’t have come here if Bristol didn’t have the ambitions that they’ve got.
“I’ve come to a side that wants to be playing in the top tier of rugby, which is where I want to be playing as well. It was an easy decision to make and it will be great to be a part of something right at the start of the journey.”
