Jones: Amos has a big future

Lyn Jones has backed Hallam Amos to make a major impact on rugby at Rodney Parade.

The Wales Under-20 starlet starts on the wing in tonight’s RaboDirect Pro12 clash with Ulster.

Amos was in fine form wearing the number 11 jersey during the Under-20s Rugby World Championship campaign this summer.

The Cardiff University medical student can also play at full-back and in the midfield and Jones reckons he will flourish with further game time.

“Hallam has a big career ahead of him at the Dragons and just needs to be out on the field,” said Jones.

“He offers a great deal to the team and was a great success on the wing in the Junior World Championship.

“It’s easy to pigeon-hole people but we need flexibility in our squad. It’s so old-fashioned to just play one position – contemporary players need the ability to play two roles.”

Jones has retained the majority of the side that started in the 22-20 pre-season victory over Bath.

Amos is one of four chances, replacing Adam Hughes on the wing, with Richie Rees at scrum-half ahead of Jonathan Evans, Aaron Coundley at loosehead and captain Andrew Coombs returning to the second row.

“Before Bath we thought we had the side that we wanted to play against Ulster but lots of players put their hands up for selection,” said Jones.

“I’ve seen these players in training but you only get to know about them when they have the pressures that come with playing.”

New signing Netani Talei will also line up on the bench for the Dragons and forwards coach Kingsley Jones reckons he can have a devastating influence.

“Talei brings a great deal of experience and massive ball-carrying ability late in the game,” said Jones.

“He has such power and that could be devastating in the closing stages tonight. He only joined us last month but he has slotted in so well and brings something different to the side.

“I’ve known about him since he was at Doncaster with Clive Griffiths and he always causes problems when he gets the ball in hands.

“There’s no doubt that he will be desperate to make his mark in his first game at Rodney Parade.”
