Patchell backs Blues’ attacking prowess

Rhys Patchell is confident Cardiff Blues will break their try drought in tonight’s RaboDirect Pro12 clash with Zebre.

The capital city region scored the least amount of tries in last season’s league campaign and they have failed to cross the whitewash this term.

But Patchell reckons the Blues are not far from firing on all cylinders and is relishing the Arms Park encounter with last year’s basement boys.

“The attacking side of the game will come,” said Patchell.

“It’s a case of sticking with it. Hopefully we can put in a better performance this week.

“The conditions haven’t been great for us so far. We were hoping it would be nice and dry and we would get to throw the ball around a bit.

“But it hasn’t worked out like that two weeks in a row now. Nobody wants to watch a game of rugby when it’s raining and it’s wet and it’s horrible.

“Hopefully we’ll get some dry weather some time soon.”

Last week’s 21-10 victory over Connacht was played in torrential rain at the Arms Park.

But man-of-the-match Patchell, who scored all of the Blues’ points insists securing the win was far more important than style

“Obviously the ball was a bit slippery because of the weather,” added Patchell.

“The rain was pretty consistent and you saw that in the amount of handling errors and knock-ons.

“There were a few that maybe on a better day would have stuck.

“The conditions weren’t conducive to the running rugby we wanted to play, so the pragmatic option was probably the best.

“Perhaps you saw a bit more kicking than you would have wanted to see.

“But winning ugly is certainly better than losing pretty. We came away with result, that’s the important thing.

“We lost a lot of games by one score or less last season. I think you saw a bit of grit and determination to pull the result out of the bag.

“It was important we got four points out of our first home game and we were thrilled to get the result, but there’s a lot to work on certainly.”
