Welsh rivals in action

Three of Wales’ four opponents in the Dove Men Series in November were in action in the Rugby Championship over the weekend and enjoyed differing fortunes.

The hitherto unbeaten Springboks, who kick-off the Autumn series at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday, 9 November, fell at the fourth hurdle in this year’s tournament as they were beaten 29-15 by the All Blacks in Auckland.

A red card to Bismarck du Plessis in the 42nd minute left the South Africans a man short for almost the whole of the second half. From a 17-10 interval deficit the visitors slipped to a bonus point defeat that now leaves them four points adrift at the top of the table with two games to go.

In Perth, Western Australia, Ewen McKenzie tasted his first win as coach of the Wallabies as they clung on to beat Argentina 14-13 in a nail-biting finish at the Patersons Stadium. Neither side had won a game before the match and McKenzie actually dropped scrum half Will Genia for the game.

In the end a ry from Israel Folau and three penalties from the boot of Christian Leali’ifano gave the Wallabies their first win since the second Test against Sam Warburton’s British & Irish Lions in Melbourne some six games ago.

Wales face the Pumas in Cardiff on Saturday, 16 November, and they will be smarting after hitting back from a 14-3 deficit to leave them a mere one point short of their hosts. They face the All Blacks next week while the Wallabies travel to South Africa.
