Big win for Bedwas

A late penalty try helped Bedwas see off a determined Llanelli in front of the S4C television cameras at Bridge Field.

The score secured a 21-15 victory and meant Steve Law’s men go into their next game with Carmarthen Quins on the back of two consecutive victories.

It was a big result for the home side, Llanelli having impressed so far this season. The west Wales outfit had the consolation of a losing bonus point but will have been disappointed with their performance in attack.

Llanelli had actually taken the lead after four minutes courtesy of a Josh Lewis penalty before Bedwas hit back. A line out move saw the ball moved into midfield where Matthew Pewtner crashed through the Llanelli defence to score to the left of the posts. Richard Powell missed the conversion.

Despite their deficit, Llanelli were hammering away at the Bedwas line though they were unable to cross the whitewash. Though their attacking game was failing to fire, Lewis added three further penalties before the interval including one from half way, to put his side seven points clear.

In contrast, Bedwas’ normally reliable kicker Powell was having an off day, missing one relatively simple kick. He did though eventually find his range, a penalty in first half injury time reducing the deficit to four points.

Powell exchanged penalties with Lewis at the start of the second half though Llanelli were still struggling to break through for a try as Bedwas defended strongly.

A raft of Bedwas substitutions after 56 minutes, with the entire front row replaced, proved a decisive moment as the home side stepped up their effort in the tight.

It meant Bedwas were well on top, but Powell missed two penalty chances as his side struggled to put Llanelli to bed.

Late in the game though, Bedwas turned up the heat. A potential score was ruled out by the video official before Llanelli saw replacement flanker Owain Morgan and centre Jonny Lewis both yellow carded. With a two man advantage, Bedwas sensed blood and after the Llanelli scrum disintegrated, the referee awarded a penalty try.

Powell added the conversion and more resolute defence saw the home side hold on for the win to the delight of the home faithful.
