Luke Charteris could make his long-awaited return to top-class action in Perpignan’s Heineken Cup opener with Gloucester on Saturday.

The Wales second-row underwent knee surgery after rupturing ligaments in December 2012.

He was set to make his comeback against Biarritz Olympique in the Top14 on the weekend but made 40-minute cameo appearance for the Catalan club’s development side instead.

Charteris suffered no ill-affects from the injury and is now in line to be unleashed upon the Cherry & White’s as Europe’s premier club competition gets underway.

Perpignan have been drawn in Pool Six, alongside Edinburgh, Gloucester and Munster
.
Charteris won the first of his 40 Wales caps in 2004 and has been an ever-present feature of their squad in recent years.

But he has not pulled on the Three Feathers since facing Australia just weeks before his injury struck.
