The Black and Ambers, who had struggled in the first month of the season, blew the All Whites away after half time to seal a bonus point.

Swansea outside half Sam Davies exchanged early penalties with Newport’s Geraint O’Driscoll but the home side conceded a soft try within the first 10 minutes. Full back Nicky Thomas was Swansea’s scorer, Davies nailing the touchline conversion for a 10-3 lead.

Dale Rogers then crashed over for Newport’s first try of the day, O’Driscoll missing the tricky touchline conversion. Davies replied with his second penalty and in a feisty and free-flowing opening, the scores kept coming. Outside half Matt O’Brien kept Newport moving with a second try, O’Driscoll adding the extra two to give Newport the lead for the first time.

The home side were now on top, centre Tyler Morgan a constant threat. Dai Pattison then scored his second try in the space of six days with the boot of O’Driscoll securing a nine point cushion. It was a comfortable advantage but yet more sloppy defending allowed Swansea back into the game. Rob Dudley-Jones scored under the posts with Davies converting before an O’Driscoll penalty ended a breathless first 40 minutes.

Davies narrowed the gap at the start of the second half though Swansea were fortunate not to have a player yellow carded when a promising Newport move was halted by a deliberate knock on. O’Driscoll put his side 28-23 up from the resulting penalty before Swansea lock Rhodri Hughes was sent to the bin.

O’Driscoll made them pay yet again and after Hughes’ time in the bin had elapsed, Morgan crossed for the bonus point try.

Young wing Ashton Hewitt then killed off any hopes of a Swansea comeback, with Elliot Frewen completing the scoring.

Aled Jenkins got a late consolation for Swansea but the home side were deserved winners of a high-scoring encounter.
