Tom Williams insists Cardiff will continue to take it game by game as the Blue and Blacks enjoy a superb start to the season.

Saturday’s 32-17 home win over old rivals Newport took Cardiff into third place in the Principality Premiership. It was a fourth consecutive win for Martyn Fowler’s side, thanks in no small part to a hat-trick of tries from Williams.

The Cardiff speedster, who regularly plays regional rugby for the Blues alongside his brother Lloyd, scored twice after half time to complete his treble and send Newport to defeat.

After also crossing in Cardiff’s three try opening salvo, it completed a memorable day for both Williams and Cardiff.

“We started off really well but lapsed off towards the end of the first half,” he said.

“As a team we left a few tries out there and missed a few tackles. But we came out really well after half time and gathered ourselves. There were still some mistakes in the second half and we’ve got things to work on but we’ll look forward to our next game now.”

After four consecutive games on the road, the meeting with Newport was Cardiff’s first home tie of the season. They celebrated in style, with Williams, Dan Fish and Rory Watts-Jones getting them off to a flying start.

In the second half, Williams complete his treble with skipper Johnathan Edwards also burrowing over. Newport did get back into things, Tyler Morgan, Ashton Hewitt and Elliot Frewen their scorers, but it was too little too late.

“It was good to get a hat-trick but the boys did the work up front and I was able to finish them off,” said Williams.

“The forwards have been working really hard during pre-season, we’ve got Johnathan Edwards in from the Scarlets and he’s a massive figure in our pack. He’s got a lot of experience and it seems to be going OK for us at the moment.

“We’re aiming for the top four. We’re on track for that but we take every game as it comes. We’ll go into the next one now and hope for a win and maybe a bonus point win the way we’re playing.”
