Hobbs: Injuries not an excuse

Stand in skipper Sam Hobbs insists Cardiff Blues’ injury crisis cannot be an excuse when they take on Glasgow Warriors in the Heineken Cup.

The Welsh region are without 12 Welsh internationals, including Sam Warburton, Gethin Jenkins and Bradley Davies for the Pool Two showdown.

They are currently bottom of Pool Two but the group is wide open and back-to-back wins over Glasgow would put them in a commanding position.

Hobbs admits it is far from an ideal position to enter Europe but they must simply get on with the task.
“Injuries happen in all sports,” said the 25-year-old prop.

“It’s not an excuse. We need to make sure all our controllables are up there and our one per centers are on the money.

Against a team like Glasgow, any slip-ups in concentration will cost us points. We need to make sure everything is right on the mark.

“With injuries come opportunities as well. We have got a lot of youngsters coming in and they have really stepped up recently.

“It’s a pretty crucial period. Toulon dropped a game against us, Exeter went up to Glasgow and lost as well, so the group is pretty much wide open.

“To get the result this weekend would be massive in our Heineken campaign with the trip to Scotland to follow next week.

“Obviously the crowd made it a special day against Toulon and hopefully we will get the crowd behind us again this time and feed off it and just give it our all.”

Hobbs unexpectedly takes on the leadership duties amid the injury crisis and must fill the void left by Heineken Cup winner Jenkins. And he has paid tribute to the influence the veteran prop has had on his career.

“I didn’t really think I’d be captain this season, but with the injuries to other guys and call-ups and things like that it sort of got thrown at me,” he said

“But I don’t really change anything. I just try and lead by example.

“Gethin has been a big help in my career. I have learned a lot from him and it’s my time to try and carry that jersey forward.

“I know he had a year’s sabbatical as I like to call it out in France.

“I know people have got this myth about him being a grumpy, miserable guy.

“But he brings an winning attitude to every situation. He wants the best for the team and it’s just his way of just dragging it out of you.

“Even in the small games of touch and little situations out in training, he wants to win. That sort of attitude has rubbed off on the younger guys and is a big influence on us.”
