He played 259 times for Cardiff between 1965 and 1975 as part of a team which boasted some of the great names of Welsh rugby including Gareth Edwards, Barry John and Gerald Davies.

Gerry Wallace earned a reputation as a top class prop forward whose free running skills were rewarded with nine tries for the Arms Park team.

He also played for Wales B and was presented with the President’s Cap after playing in the match against Tonga in 1974.

He was one of 25 players awarded President’s Caps after certain games were upgraded to warrant the presentation of the special WRU recognition.

Gerry Wallace was presented with his cap by his former Cardiff RFC teammate Dennis Gethin who is now President of the Welsh Rugby Union.

Dennis Gethin said: “I find this news beyond belief. Having had the pleasure of awarding Gerald his President’s Cap last month, I can say he was a larger than life character who certainly deserved the honour of receiving his cap.

“He was a superb front row player for Cardiff and someone who played the game to an international standard.”

A minute’s silence has been arranged before the Cardiff Blues versus Glasgow Warriors Heineken Cup fixture at Cardiff Arms Park this evening as a tribute to his memory.
