The first half was a reasonably tight affair before Ponty turned the screw after the break. Tries from Geraint Walsh, Dan Godfrey and Garyn Smith, the third converted by Dai Flanagan, gave them a 17-8 lead despite Daniel Thomas scoring for the visitors and Gareth Walters slotting over a penalty.
After the break Ponty ran in a further six tries, with Lewis Williams, Rhys Shellard, Matthew Nuthall and two from Jordan Siengwski along with a second from Smith doing the damage. Justin Jones scored for Llanelli, converted by Walters, but his side were outclassed in their bid for silverware this season.
Championship leaders and perennial giant-killers Ebbw Vale were undone in their attempt to defeat another Premiership side as they lost 16-13 at home to Llandovery. The Steelmen dominated the first half and were 6-0 up at the break thanks to two penalties from Iain Smerdon.
They really should have been further in front but Tom McAloon couldn’t get the ball to ground after crossing the visitors’ line.Llandovery finally sparked into life after the break and James Garland kicked a penalty before hooker Luke Lewis was sent to the bin.
But despite going down to 14 men they leveled the scores through a Garland drop-goal. The visitors had the bit between their teeth and stole the ball 10 metres from their own line before executing an 80 metre counter attack finished off by Tom Ball.
Garland converted and then added another penalty as Ebbw flanker Ron Kynes was shown yellow. Ebbw salvaged some pride on the stroke of time with a try by replacement Lewis Young, but Smerdon’s conversion could only cut the gap to three points.
Aberavon edged to a 26-22 victory over Premier Division rivals Carmarthen Quins in a tight game at the Talbot Athletic Ground. Quins had the advantage at the end of a low-scoring first half thanks to a try from Will Boyd and a penalty from Craig Evans which cancelled out Matthew Jenkins’ converted try.
The visitors kept in front thanks to three more penalties from Evans, while Jay Barker grabbed a try for the Wizards. But with the scores at 12-17 Evans was shown a yellow card and Aberavon capitalised. Ben Thomas and Nathan Brown both scored converted tries to take them into the lead and although Rhys Williams got a late consolation for Quins it wasn’t enough and they were knocked out of the cup.
Another all-Premier Division clash saw Cardiff comfortably beaten 10-25 by Cross Keys. The hosts were overpowered in the first half, managing only a penalty from Dean Gunter while Leon Andrews ran in the opening try of the day, converted by Dorian Jones. Jones also kicked two penalties to give his side a 3-13 lead at the break.
Shaun Powell did mange to cross the line for Cardiff after the break, converted by Gunter, but Jones’ boot added four more penalties and secured progression to the semi-finals.
