Wales Under 20 have their eyes set on a successful Junior World Championship campaign after finishing their Six Nations with a 43-15 win over Scotland.

The seven-try victory at Parc Eirias, Colwyn Bay meant Wales finished third behind France and England, giving them momentum ahead of this summer’s trip to New Zealand.

The Junior World Championship is the main annual target for the Wales Under 20 side and after finishing second in the tournament last year, Byron Hayward’s men are targeting a similar result.

Head coach Hayward said: “”We played well in the first half into the wind and in the second half, it was just a question of playing the ball the in right areas and getting into good positions to score. It was important to deliver a good performance and we did that.

“Overall, we have gone through a steep learning curve over the last couple of months and learnt a lot of lessons which will be key as we look to select our squad for the Junior World Championship and prepare for that tournament.”

Wales certainly had too much power for Scotland last Friday as a powerful forward performance laid the platform for victory.

Two first half yellow cards hindered the visitors but Wales scored three tries before the break and four more after in a comfortable success.

Prop Nicky Smith, who was named man of the match, said: “I’m pleased with my performance but you have to do it as a pack – the boys have been great in the set piece all tournament.

“Finishing third isn’t bad but we did have higher expectations. We lost two games due to our performances and hopefully if we play France and England again it will be a different result.

“All the boys will go back to their clubs now and hopefully play well. We really want to go far in the Junior World Championship.

“I’m pretty sure with the quality we have in the squad that we’ll do well.”
