Wales lost to eventual champions New Zealand in the Cup quarter-finals before brushing aside Canada with an error-free display to earn a Plate final spot against South Africa.
Wales led at the break but the Blitzbokke stormed back in the second half to edge a thriller 19-14 but on a positive note Williams’ side have closed the gap on the four teams above them in the overall series rankings as they target a top six finish with two rounds remaining.
“We’ve got mixed emotions really as we are obviously disappointed to lose to South Africa. But I can’t fault the effort of the boys. It’s just unfortunate we fell short in the end,” he said.
“We suffered two losses during the tournament and the game against New Zealand we were very disappointed because we had a lot of errors in our game but we then bounced back against a very good Canada side and then just fell short against South Africa.
“The performance against Canada was outstanding – we hardly had any errors in the game, we dominated all aspects of the game and managed to come away with a 31-14 win.”
Despite losing to South Africa in the Plate final, Williams is now confident his side can complete the final two rounds of the World Series in Glasgow and Twickenham on a high note.
“We have got to take this as a positive finishing sixth in Hong Kong – we’ve got the home tournaments left in Scotland and England so hopefully we can get to the quarter-finals as a minimum and kick on.
“It’s good to catch those above us in the points table as 10th place is not where we want to be – we want to be in that top six – that’s our aim and we’ve got two tournaments left to go it.”
Wales will face Fiji, Argentina and Kenya in Pool C for round eight of the HSBC Sevens World Series, the Emirates Airline Glasgow Sevens on 3-4 May 2014.
