Members of the Wales squad helped produce a short video and promotional material for the campaign titled ‘The Best Defence – is to know the FACTS’.
The facts are hard hitting and it’s hoped by raising awareness more lives can be saved.
The WRU’s support of the campaign kicked off on Saturday at the Wales v Scotland RBS 6 Nations game with the video shown for the first time on the big screens at the Millennium Stadium before the game.
In the coming weeks the WRU will be sending promotional material of the campaign to all 320 members clubs to help ensure the facts are known.
The facts relating to prostate cancer in Wales are startling;
· It is the most common cancer in Welsh men
· The rate for men in Wales is the highest in the U.K with 1 in 8 men diagnosed
· 550 Welsh men die each year from the disease.
Former WRU Secretary Ray Williams OBE, has recently been appointed as an ambassador for the charity and is helping to lead the campaign.
“One of our aims is to make people aware of the facts surrounding this disease and with the active support of the WRU, for which we are extremely grateful, welaunched our awareness campaign during the Six Nations,” he said.
“The cancer rate for men in Wales is the highest in the UK and Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Welsh men.
‘Posters are being sent to clubs across Wales and we are asking for their support to display them and help us raise the facts and inform people.
“The more exposure we can get will be for the ultimate benefit of men in Wales.”
